Financial support for education is more available than most students realise — but the deadlines are easy to miss and the applications require advance preparation. Here are the most important scholarships currently open or recurring annually for secondary and senior secondary students in India.
Central government scholarships
National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS): For Class 8 students from economically weaker sections, this scheme provides ₹12,000 per year through secondary school. The selection test is conducted by states. Check your state education board's website for dates — most tests happen in November.
Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships (CSSS): For students who score in the top 20th percentile of their Class 12 board exams. ₹12,000-₹20,000 per year. Apply through the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in) after board results.
PM YASASVI Scheme: For OBC, EBC, and DNT students in Classes 9 and 11. Up to ₹75,000 per year for Day Scholar and ₹1,25,000 for hostellers. Entrance test conducted by NTA.
State government scholarships
Every state has its own scholarship schemes, often better funded than central schemes for local students. Search '[your state] scholarship Class 10' or '[your state] scholarship Class 12' on the National Scholarship Portal or your state's education department website.
Private and corporate scholarships
Tata Scholarship, Reliance Foundation Scholarships, and HDFC Educational Crisis Scholarship are among the most reputable. These are merit-and-means based and open to students regardless of their board or stream. Application windows typically open April–July.

Quick checklist before applying
Gather documents: Aadhaar, bank account (your own or parent's), last year's marksheet, income certificate, caste certificate if applicable.
Check eligibility carefully — many scholarships have income limits (typically ₹2.5–6 lakh annual family income).
Apply before the deadline — late applications are categorically rejected on the portal.
Track your application status on the portal. Renewal is often required each year.
