Design is one of India's most misunderstood career paths. Many families still see it as a fallback or hobby. The reality is that professional designers are among the most sought-after and well-compensated professionals in India's growing startup and tech ecosystem. Here is the full picture.

What kinds of design exist as careers?

Product Design (also called Industrial Design): designing physical objects — furniture, appliances, vehicles, medical devices. India's manufacturing sector needs more of these.

UX/UI Design: designing digital products — apps, websites, software interfaces. This is the fastest-growing design career in India. Good UX designers at tech companies earn ₹8–25 lakh starting.

Graphic and Communication Design: visual identity, branding, advertising, publishing. These roles are in every company that has a brand — which is all of them.

Fashion Design: clothing, textiles, accessories. India has a strong fashion industry centered in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.

Interior and Spatial Design: spaces, architecture interiors, retail environments, hospitality.

The entrance exams you need to know

NID DAT: National Institute of Design entrance — one of India's best design colleges.

NIFT entrance: National Institute of Fashion Technology — for fashion, textile, and communication design.

UCEED: IIT design entrance — leads to Bachelor of Design at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad.

CEED: For postgraduate design at IITs — relevant after graduation.

A portfolio is more important than a score. Start building work now — sketch, photograph, design on Canva or Figma. The admission panels want to see how you see the world.

Science or Arts for design?

Most design entrance exams are open to any stream. However, having a strong visual arts background (through school or self-study) matters far more than your stream. Some students take PCM for 'safety' and pursue design entrance alongside — this works but spreads your preparation thin.
